Every single film stock still made today – Part 1: ADOX to Dubblefilm

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably wondered how many fresh film stocks are still in production and available for purchase today. With the help of Phil Harrison, I checked. At the time of writing, there are at least 175 of them…and that’s where this multi-part series comes in.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be detailing every single freshly produced film stock you can still buy today. In each part, you will find details about the manufacturers, the film stocks themselves and sample photographs. For clarity (and sanity), each article describes films sorted by vendor/brand name first, then the name of the stock.

For example:

  • ADOX >> ADOX CHS 100 Type II
  • ILFORD (Harman Technology) >> ILFORD HP5 PLUS
  • ILFORD (Harman Technology) >> Kentmere 400
  • Fujifilm >> Fujifilm Velvia 50 (RVP)

This list, whilst comprehensive, still needs your knowledge in order to make it 100% complete. With that in mind, there is a link to a submission form at the foot of this page, which will let you send over updates, sample images and other useful information that may have been missed or detailed incorrectly.

With introductions out of the way, let’s get stuck in with part 1, which covers each of the 20 film stocks still in production from A through E. Here’s what’s covered:

 

 

ADOX films

The ADOX name traces back to the oldest photographic film manufacturer in the world, established in 1860. Rights to the name were obtained by Fotoimpex in 2003. A factory was subsequently established in Bad Sarrow, just outside of Berlin to convert and package films, papers and chemicals.

In 2015 the company acquired a medium-scale coating facility in Switzerland and in 2017 began work on expanding the Bad Sarrow facility to add film coating capability. The new factory should be operational by Q2 2018 and bring with it the re-release of CHS 100 – either Type II or Type III.

ADOX CMS 20

ADOX CMS 20 II is a low-speed ortho-panchromatic black and white negative film with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 20/14°. It is, according to ADOX, the sharpest, most fine-grained and highest resolving image recording system in the world.

The film cannot be developed in regular developers and in all formats, is coated on to a totally transparent polyester base, making it ideal for reversal processing as B&W slide film.

ADOX Scala 160

ADOX SCALA is a black and white reversal film designed specifically for reversal processing. When reversal processed, optimal exposure should be at ISO 160.

SCALA is coated onto a clear triacetate base and features an increased silver content (in comparison to a negative film). The film is currently only available in 35mm format, although ADOX have stated that subject to manufacturing capability, other formats may become available in the future.

ADOX SILVERMAX 100

ADOX Silvermax 100 is a medium-speed black and white negative film with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 100/21°. It has a significantly increased silver content (30 percent higher silver when compared to regular black and white negative films).

Silvermax has an anti-halation layer between the emulsion and film base, which leads to a marked improvement in the detail contrast and very high sharpness. The film is coated onto a triacetate base and only available in 35mm format.

Agfa films

Agfa (Agfa-Gevaert from 1964 onwards), was one of the earliest European producers of glass plate and film products. From the early 1900’s until 2004, the company sold film and photographic film ranging from consumer and motion picture film to specialist medical and military use products.

Following the management buy out of its consumer film business in 2004 (which itself filed for bankruptcy one year later), the company no-longer produces or directly sells consumer film products. The company does, however, continue to produce sound recording/print film for the motion picture industry, aerial photography products, microfilms and other specialist photosensitive materials.

Agfa Copex Rapid

Agfa Copex Rapid is a low-speed panchromatic black and white film with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 50/18°. Excellent resolution, very fine grain and excellent acutance are characteristic of Copex Rapid. Copex Rapid is coated on a polyester base and ideal for reversal processing in the Scala process.

Copex Rapid remains one of the only Agfa films sold under that brand name. It is purchased, bulk loaded and sold by Macodirect in Germany.

Agfaphoto films

Agfaphoto Holding Gmbh manages brand licencing rights for the technically-defunct Agfaphoto Gmbh – a company founded in 2004 as a management buyout of Agfa-Gevaert’s consumer film division (see the Agfa listing).

The Agfaphoto brand name is currently licensed to Lupus Imaging, who sell a number of rebranded 35mm consumer films under the APX, Vista and Precisa product names. The future of the latter two lines are in question, as the supplier of raw material (Fujifilm) continues its long and drawn out of the analogue photographic material and service market.

Agfaphoto APX 100

Agfaphoto’s APX 100 Professional is a medium speed (ISO 100/21°) black and white negative film. The film is suggested for use in “everyday situations, including architecture, landscape, documentation, and still-life photography”.

At the time of writing the film is rebrand Rollei RPX 100 and is coated on a triacetate base.

Agfaphoto APX 400

AgfaPhoto’s APX 400 Professional is an ISO 400/27° black and white negative film and suggested for “use in low-light conditions and with fast-moving subjects”. According to Agfaphoto, the film can effectively be pushed to EI 1600/33°

At the time of writing the film is rebrand Rollei RPX 400 and is coated on a triacetate base.

Agfaphoto CT Precisa 100

Agfaphoto CT Precisa 100 is a medium-speed color reversal film with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 100/21°. According to the company it is, “distinguished by a natural color reproduction, excellent sharpness and extremely fine grain”.

The film is coated on a triacetate base and based on edge markings/serial numbers, is rebranded Fuji Provia 100-family slide film – technically referred to as R100, although internally at Fuji, this designation relates to a 1970’s era E4 process slide film. Fuji, like some other end-to-end film vendors, did once provide a custom emulsion service, however this practice was ended somewhere around 2010. The end of Precisa 100 likely means that stockpiles of master rolls for this film have been used up and Fuji are refusing/unable to make more. My guess is the latter.

Vista Plus 200 (CN) is a daylight-type ISO 200/24° color negative film that incorporates “New Super Uniform Fine Grain Technology” to achieve high image quality when printed on AgfaPhoto papers.

Based on edge markings, it is rebranded Fuji C200 film stock and coated on a triacetate base.

Arista films

Arista is a brand owned and sold by Freestyle Photographic Supplies, based in Los Angeles, California.

According to Freestlye, “several years ago, Freestyle sought to counter the trend of rising photo supply costs by introducing the Arista.EDU Ultra line of film and paper. In a time when industry heavyweights have exited the traditional photographic field, Arista.EDU Ultra provides students and educators a reliable supply of high quality and affordable photographic materials.”

Arista.EDU ULTRA 100

Currently repackaged Fomapan 100 Classic, Arista’s.EDU ULTRA 100 is an ISO 100/21° panchromatic black and white negative film which responds well to push processing.

The film is sold in 35mm 36 exposure rolls, 35mm 100ft bulk-loading reels, 120 roll film and sheet formats. 120 and sheet film versions are coated on a polyester base. Both 35mm varieties are coated on polyester.

It should be noted that the latest 35mm/36 exposure inventory is not DX-coded and 100ft reels do not have frame numbers or edge markings.

BERGGER films

BERGGER was created in 1995 by Guy Gerard a former engineer at French manufacturer Guilleminot and his childhood friend, Daniel Boucher. The company seeks to continue the tradition of fine photographic materials started by his former employer over 130 years ago.

Initially selling products made partly or wholly by subcontractors and other partners such as Forte and ORWO, the company has refocused its attention on the creation of brand new, unique emulsions. Today’s BERGGER Pancro 400 is an example of this effort.

BERGGER Pancro 400

BERGGER Pancro 400 is a two-emulsion, black and white panchromatic negative film with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 400/27°. The film offers the look of a traditional-grained film, has excellent exposure latitude and push processing flexibility; and can be developed in a BW reversal process to produce slides

In 35mm format, the film is coated on a triacetate base. 120 roll film and sheet formats use a polyester base. When developed, the film requires a prewash and one additional minute of fixing.

CineStill Film

Cinestill is famous for its signature “preremoved” motion picture films, Cinestill 800T and CineStill 50D – Kodak VISION3 500T 5219 and VISION3 50D 5203 respectively.

At the time of Cinestill 800T’s release, the world of colour motion picture film as a still photography medium was still relatively small. Colour motion picture films come with a special “remjet” layer, which requires specific attention in development and cannot be simply washed away by traditional consumer minilabs.

Cinestill’s process of removing the remjet layer from the unexposed film without damaging the emulsion single-handedly opened up the beauty of motion picture film to everyone with access to develop C-41 film at home or in a lab.

In early 2016 the company took to Indiegogo to bring their 35mm films to 120 and 4×5 formats and began fulfilment later that year. Although the 4×5 version remains a backer-only product at the time of writing, the company has stated that bringing it to market is among their future plans.

CineStill Xpro C-41 50 (50D)

CineStill Xpro C-41 50 Daylight is a low-speed colour negative film with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 50/18°. The film is a “preremoved” version of the finest-grained colour negative film available today; Kodak VISION3 50D 5203, a motion picture film stock.

In both 35mm and 120 formats, the film is coated on a triacetate base. The removal of the remjet layer effectively removes any anti-halation from the film, which will result in an increased halo effect on 35mm film, especially when shot in low light.

The backing paper of 120 format film helps to reintroduce anti-halation and as a result, both films produce slightly different results.

CineStill Xpro C-41 800 Tungsten (800T)

CineStill Xpro C-41 800 Tungsten is a high-speed color negative film with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 800/30°. Xpro C-41 800 Tungsten produces atmospheric, warm, coordinated colors in artificial light. This unique film is suitable for all available light situations and can be used in daylight with an 85B warming filter.

The film is a “preremoved” version of Kodak VISION3 500T 5219, which refers to the removal of the film’s remjet layer, meaning it can be developed in normal consumer film labs without issue.

As with Cinestill 50D, 35mm and 120 format versions of the film are coated on a triacetate base; and the lack of a remjet layer means there is no anti-halation layer on either version of this film.

dubblefilm

Dubblefilm started as a mobile phone app, inspired by the analogue film community. Four years after its release, the company decided it was time to “get real” and create their own film stock – the first digital-to-analogue business in the film photography industry.

Working in collaboration with KONO! The Reanimated Film, dubblefilm currently provide four stocks, BUBBLEGUM, MONSOON, MOONSTRUCK and SUNSTROKE, created using a unique manufacturing process.

Ending part one

Twenty film stocks down and we’ve only just scratched the surface. The next part of this series covers F to H, in which you’ll find over 30 film stocks under the microscope. There would have been more but Fuji keep discontinuing them.

To summarise part one and underline this whole endeavour, I will say this: there are plenty of folks out there telling us that film is gone, dead and irrelevant but thankfully, there are more of us shouting back and, shooting and doing the good work of continuing production. To everyone on this side of the fence, keep at it. There’s so much more to look forward to over the coming years.

    • Even Agfaphoto can’t differentiate the two, Olli 😉 The descriptions for all their films were taken their website.

  4. @falcos2012 Take it into Jessops (High Street photography retailers). For a fiver for each film they send it to Germany for E6 / C41 processing. I’ve had Provia 120 developed this way and the lab are consistent and reliable.

  5. Nicely done. It is inspirational to see someone undertaking a project of such proportions, and the fact that you are sharing it with we ‘silver surfers’ is nothing short of magnanimous. I’m a big fan of Adox CMS 20, the Rollei Retro lineup (especially the 8 x 10 100 Tonal) and Efke.

  6. This is a fantastic effort! What a great resource of information. I would like to say that if your readers have not tried or do not use Bergger Pancro film that they shoot a roll or two of it. I think it’s the best panchromatic film available right now.

  8. Well done that man! Of particular attention to me is the information on ADOX Scala:) I would love to shoot this film both in 135 & 120 as a slide film:) Sadly, there are no UK Labs currently offering that service:( There are plenty in France & Germany, but I cannot afford the postage:( So, come on UK Labs, this is a niche waiting to be filled!
