Update 01: 2018-09-20

Welcome to part six of this series exploring every single film stock still being made today. Combining parts onetwothreefour and five, this series has so far covered 150 film stocks.

Adding S to Y gives us another 32, bringing our running total to 182 and closes off the individual listing aspect of this series. The seventh and final part will include a single, collected list of all the films featured in this series with quick links so you can jump to individual detail. More on that at the foot of this article.

As per the rest of this series, here’s the basic format used for the detail listings:

  • ADOX >> ADOX SILVERMAX 100
  • Fujifilm >> Fujifilm Velvia 50 (RVP)
  • ILFORD (Harman Technology) >> ILFORD HP5 PLUS
  • ILFORD (Harman Technology) >> Kentmere 400
  • Japan Camera Hunter >> JCH Screetpan 400

Any uncredited sample images below are my own and exist in one form or another as Daily Photos, or part of articles written by yours truly for this website. Every other image has been credited to the photographer who created it. Product images were obtained from specific vendor websites/materials and have been credited at the foot of this article.

Here are the films covered in this article:

Shanghai (上海) films

Shanghai films include still photographic, industrial X-ray and medical X-ray products. They are produced by Shanggong Shenbei (Group) Co., Ltd – 上工申贝(集团)股份有限公司 – at the Shanggong Shanghai Photosensitive Material Factory, originally established in 1958.

Today, the factory is a large-scale enterprise and produces traditional film products as well as high-end digital imaging materials. The company partners with Fujifilm for the production of Fuji colour photo paper.

Shanghai GP3 (上海GP3)

Shanghai GP3 (上海GP3) is an ISO 100/21° panchromatic black and white negative film coated on polyester or triacetate film base depending on the format. The film is available in 120 rollfilm and a multitude of sheet film formats from 3.25×4.24″ to 20×24″. Shanghai suggest an extended fixing time of 5-10 minutes in Kodak F5 Hardening Fixer (or similar).

It is a fine-grained film with excellent push-processing capabilities and can be successfully pushed to EI 1600 with an appropriate extended development time. Reach out to me if you’d like them in advance of my upcoming Shanghai GP3 development times article.

Silberra films

Silberra has been manufacturing supplies for the analogue photography community in Russia since 2009. Over the years the Silberra team has reinvented a number of developer and fixer chemistries to support their growing market and the company has most recently begun bringing new films market, which including custom-coated stocks from Agfa, as well as brand new, self-coated emulsions created and refined in Russia.

Silberra PAN100

Silberra PAN100 is an ISO 100/21° panchromatic black and white negative film which exhibits extra-fine grain, a wide tonal range, excellent perfect sharpness and moderate contrast.

The film benefits from an extended, near-IR sensitivity, which provides improved detail when shooting in low light. When underexposed, all Silberra PAN films acquire a distinctive green tone.

PAN100 film includes a special anti-curl layer and the polyester base has been treated to provide better scratch resistance and resistance to water marks.

The film is available in 36 exposure non DX-coded 35mm cartridges.

Silberra U200

Silberra’s U200 is an ISO 200/24° panchromatic black and white negative film, and one of two new “U” film stocks from the company. The films have been designed to take advantage of a high-contrast, mixed-grain emulsion, which combines both flat and classic grain, allowing the film to provide the high resolving power of T-grain while preserving the natural tonal softness of classic emulsions.

It is multi-speed, mixed-grain, panchromatic film, capable of being exposed at EI 100, 200 and 400 whilst preserving acceptable contrast and dynamic range. The “U” name (for those who have followed Silberra’s history), comes from their ULTIMA series, which is based on the same substrate: a thin, flat and crystal clear polyester base.

Silberra advises a number of precautions when using U films:

  1. Loading the film subdued light (due to a very thin base, the first frame may appear to be overexposed as a result of light to penetrating the film cartridge light shield).
  2. When loading film for development, ensure the reels are absolutely dry to avoid displacement.

In recognition of the first point above, Silberra U films are loaded at 37-exposure, non-DX coded cartridges. The first batch Silberra U film became available on retail in June 2018 and is considered an “open test batch”.

Svema films

Founded in 1931, Svema (Свема, Светочувствительные Материалы) was the trademark of the now-defunct Shostka Chemical Plant in Ukraine.

Originally making both photographic films and paper, the company ceased production in 2000. Some manufacturing equipment was taken over by Astrum, who now continue to produce Svema branded films.

Signing out for part six

To all intents and purposes, that’s this series complete – the detail listing at least. A seventh part will be coming soon, which will provide quick links for each of the films featured on a single page.

I started collecting details for this series over a year ago and what you’ve seen here would not have been possible without the help of Phil Harrison, who helped collect film data and give me the push needed to get it out in the form that you see today. Thanks again, Phil.

The final tally is 182 film stocks in ~300 different format combinations. Of those we have ~130 unique film stocks and ~50 rebrands/re-imaginings (Yodica, KONO!, Dubble and Revolog being an example of that). There are still a few updates to come, which I’ll be making over the coming weeks, so expect those numbers to shift a little here and there.

Image credits/thanks to Michael Raso over at the Film Photography Project, Marco and Cinzia over at Yodica, the Silberra team the lovely folks at Ultrafine.

Before you go, allow me one final indulgence

Film is here, film is growing. That’s not going to change. If you’re reading this and still not 100% convinced of the relevance of analogue photography as a creative medium in the 21st century, I’m not sure what else I can do to demonstrate that fact. The 182 individual statements that make up this and the five parts that have come before it should be enough.

For all you film shooters, here’s something: next time someone looks at your film camera and asks, “do they still make film for that?”, try answering, “yes, over 180 different kinds.” 😉

Thanks for reading.

    2. Fantastic, isn’t it!

  4. Have you included the ones previously sent / do you need more pictures from some of the stocks?

  5. And I still don’t know who makes Ultrafine. Nuts. Great resource though.

  6. Oh shit. I thought it ended at part 3!
