My first roll… Of 35mm film – Kodak Tri-X 400
I’m not 100% sure that this is my very first roll, but based on the crap technique and some of the subjects, I’m pretty certain that if it’s not the first roll, it’s not far off. I took a couple of photography classes in high-school and saved most of the negatives and a few of…

36 keepers: Working towards a perfect roll of film in India
One of the things I tried while in India was to set myself a simple challenge: to shoot a “perfect” roll of 36 exposures.

Kodak T-MAX 400: An honest film stock review
I have always been on the fence about Kodak’s T-MAX 400 film. I have been using it on and off for the last ten years now but only had really used it for specific purposes, mainly portraits due to its super sharp rendering and high resolution with very fine grain. T-MAX 400 also has beautiful contrast right off…

5 Frames… At a steam traction engine rally with Kodak T-MAX 400 (EI 400 / 120 format / Pentax 67II)

EMULSIVE interview #214: I am Ejatu Shaw and this is why I shoot film
I first came across today’s interviewee back in December 2019 after she posted a video messing around with Kodak Gold in Barcelona. Thanks to that quick DM and ensuing chat, I’ve finally been able to get her to grace these pages as interviewee #214. Ladies and gents, this is Ejatu Shaw. Hi Ejatu, what’s this…

GAS and the “wrong” camera: Skateboarders with the Pentax 6×7 in Singapore
I suffer from GAS: Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Even as I write this I have a painfully expensive Mamiya 6 on its way from Japan because I just had to have a medium format camera that’s light and easy to carry. You know, because my 35mm cameras are great, but what if I find myself in…

5 Frames… With Kodak T-MAX 400 (EI 400 / 35mm format / Canon 7)
This past summer, I became interested in Kodak T-MAX 400 in 35mm format. I was hoping for a film stock that was a little more contrasty than ILFORD Delta and less grainy than Tri-X 400. I also chose ISO 400 film rather than ISO 100 film because I wanted a film that would have a…

EMULSIVE’s most popular film stock reviews of 2019
There are a few days left for 2019 but fingers crossed, it’s the first year for quite some time where we haven’t seen one or more film discontinued – great, isn’t it? In fact, we’ve seen somewhere in the region of three new film stocks announced AND released – ILFORD ORTHO PLUS, Fujifilm NEOPAN 100…

5 Frames… With Kodak T-MAX 400 (EI 200 / 120 format / Agfa Super Isolette)
The Agfa Super Isolette with its Agfa Solinar 75 mm f/3.5 lens is considered by many to be the finest 120 folding camera ever made so my expectations of this camera were very high when I purchased it from the well know folder repairman Certo6 in the US. This 1955 German-made camera has excellent build…

5 Frames… With Kodak T-MAX 400 (EI 400 / 35mm format / Canon EOS 1N)
Having been and ILFORD user since learning to shoot with it in high school, I thought it high time I gave some Kodak stock a look (I have been shooting film again for about two years – a VERY

The Olympus XA review: how I fell in love with a tiny plastic box…
…and back in love with photography again and again. Warning: the following review of the diminutive Olympus XA is highly biased and totally subjective. I love the darn thing and actually own 2 of them.

Once every couple of months, I throw a film into my old Canon EOS5 (the Plastic Fantastic) and follow my daughter around for the day, shooting the stuff she gets up to.

Film notes: Kodak Professional T-MAX 400
Kodak T-MAX 400 is by far one of my favorite black and white films to shoot. It has a great balance of classic grain and also great latitude. Negatives are easily identified by edge markings stating “TMY-2”.

Repulsion to attraction: my Kodak T-MAX 400 story so far
Kodak T-MAX 100 is undoubtedly the film I prefer after Tri-X 400 but despite this T-Grain appreciation, I have never been able to fully appreciate T-MAX 400.
