For a photographer, there is nothing quite like the experience of looking onto the focus screen of a TLR or other medium format, primarily waist-level viewfinder cameras such as Hasselblads, Bronicas or Mamiya RB67s.

5 Frames… Shooting Blues Night 1993 with Stan Webb and Chicken Shack on Kodak T-MAX 3200 (35mm Format / EI 3200 / Minolta X-300 + Tokina SD 70-210mm f/4-5.6)
In autumn 1993 it was time again. The annual Blues Night in the neighboring town of Idar-Oberstein was coming up. This time I also wanted to take pictures there. My first time in a dark hall with a few spotlights on stage. What do I need? Flash was already categorically ruled out for me. I […]
EMULSIVE Interview #222: I am Kris Askey and this is why I shoot film
After an 8-month hiatus, I’d like to welcome you all back to the EMULSIVE interview. Yes, yes, 2020 be damned, etc. Last year was a challenging one for me and I took a bit more of a hit than I expected but, as I kept telling myself, there are two things to remember: 1) things […]
New “contact print” Instax film from Fuji plus another underpowered toy camera, the Instax Mini 40
If you’re looking for a cheap point-and-shoot upgrade from Fuji’s last cheap point-and-shoot Instax camera, the company will gladly cover you as of just a few hours ago with the brand new, two-button-two-setting Instax Mini 40 camera. Added to that, if you happen to be missing the darkroom in today’s purely digital photography age, you […]
5 Frames… Of ILFORD HP5 PLUS on a Werra I (35mm Format / EI 500 / Carl Zeiss Jena 50/2.8 Tessar)
The Werra I is an east german jewel of a camera, produced from 1954 until 1967 by Cal Zeiss Jena. Love at first glance is how it started for me; the camera looked like the brainchild of a team of designers free from the directives emanating from marketing executives, or any other authority, as a […]
5 Frames… On original Fujifilm ACROS with a century-old Kodak Hawkeye No2 Model B (120 Format / EI 100)
Last year’s lockdown left me simultaneously busy with work and also with lots of time stuck at home I would not have normally had. The up and downsides of the new lockdown lifestyle. One of the advantages of this was it gave me a bit of time to sort through some old cameras I’d been […]
Film stock review: Cinestill BWXX
I started writing this article in 2019 and left it as a draft for EM here for quite a while. The reason for this is that while I enjoy writing, I don’t often think that my “reviews” are especially the most I have to offer. I wrote a disparaging follow up to a piece I’d […]
5 Frames… Of Kodak Ektar 100 from a year around Georgia on Kodak Ektar 100 (35mm Format / EI 100 / Pentax K1000)
Late last year, my wife and I wanted to combine my love of photography with our shared love of travel, exploring, and just getting into adventures together. We decided to work on a personal photo project. For the project, we are attempting to visit every county in the state of Georgia in the 2021 Calendar […]
My new portrait project: “Inspired”, passionate artists and a 145-year-old Dallmeyer 3B 290mm f/3 Portrait Petzval lens
I have been looking for this historical artwork for some years – a useable Dallmeyer 3B Portrait Petzval 290mm f/3 lens made during the 70s — the1870s. Finally, I got it (with some help). The lens is at the heart of my project, “Inspired”, which will be published in a book — you can register […]
