5 Frames… Shot with my daughter-in-law on ILFORD FP4 PLUS (EI 125 / 35mm / Agfa Optima 1A)
These photos were taken on the first roll of film taken by a complete newbie to film photography, my daughter-in-law Amy, on her first visit to Australia in July 2019, when she stayed with us in Perth for a few days, and then went on to Sydney. I’m in my late 70’s now, but I…

Unexpected adventures with expired ILFORD FP4 PLUS film
I have never used expired film or used a bulk loader until now. Not however for any particular reason, probably just because I simply didn’t feel the need to. I had been given a bulk loader and a handful of reloadable cassettes in a collection of darkroom gear by a retired professional. He no longer…

5 Frames… With ILFORD FP4 PLUS (EI 400 / 35mm format / Rollei 35T)
I’d always wanted one of those fancy little Rollei pocket cameras, but— for whatever reason— hadn’t ever bought one. On a recent whim, I took a “today is the day” -type moment, and followed it to its logical conclusion. Thus, a lovely Rollei 35T with a Rollei Tessar 40mm F/3.5 and non-functional (unnecessary?) meter came…

Camera review: The Canon SURE SHOT Z135
It has come to the point in my life where I am the ‘camera guy’ to family and colleagues; I will not lie to you, I have brought this on myself, and knew it would happen. When Christmas or a birthday rolls around, I get camera-themed goods. At work I’d previously been given a camera…

Travelling with film: My Sri Lankan travelogue
I suspect it’s a common dilemma, you’ve booked a holiday with your partner (and or family/friends) and there’s no doubt the destination was influenced by potential photographic opportunities. How on earth are you going to balance wanting to take lots of photos with what other people want to do?!

EMULSIVE Interview #204: I am Richard Davies and this is why I shoot film
Plates, films, stars and scenes. I’ve been following today’s fresh interviewee (on social media!) pretty much since EMULSIVE came into existence back in June 2015 and I’m so, so happy to have finally been able to get him on for an interview. It’s Twitter’s Palaeoboy, aka Richard Davies! Over to you, Richard… Hi Richard, what’s…

The Bronica ETR: 40 years old but not an old dog
When I came back to film photography in early 2018, very soon I wanted to try medium format film. Not being sure if I would like it with its lesser number of photos per roll compared to a 35mm film…

Saxonvale: two years documenting a brownfield industrial site
This is the story of a photo project which started on a whim and grew into something far bigger than I’d imagined. Fingers crossed it’s not finished yet, but more on that later.

Travelogue: Following in Vivian Maier’s footsteps, my trip to Chicago
Traditionally when I go away on holiday, I tend to pick the less touristy places. That way I can get a better feel for a country and its people.

The Olympus XA review: how I fell in love with a tiny plastic box…
…and back in love with photography again and again. Warning: the following review of the diminutive Olympus XA is highly biased and totally subjective. I love the darn thing and actually own 2 of them.

5 Frames… With ILFORD FP4 PLUS (EI 125 / 620 format / Kodak Brownie Flash II)
Reading EMULSIVE reminded me that I’d shot my first roll of film in 1961, when, as a young boy, I’d bought a very old Kodak box camera from a village jumble sale with my pocket money.
