Coming from Kodak’s Fourth Annual Kodak Film Awards is the news that five of the six major Hollywood film studios — Disney, NBC Universal, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros — have signed new deals with Kodak guaranteeing their use of the company’s motion picture film products from 2020 for the foreseeable future.

This “re-signing” follows an original agreement made in February 2015 between Kodak and all six major studios (Disney, Fox, NBC Universal, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros). Fox is absent from this most recent deal following a recent purchase by Disney (thanks, Alan), and as with the 2015 agreement, the exact volume of film and timeframes have not yet been disclosed

News of this agreement follows Kodak’s Q3 2018 financial guidance, which included a 21% year on year growth of the company’s film business.

Kodak’s Fourth Annual Kodak Film Awards, which took place at the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Clubhouse on Wednesday, January 29 also saw a number of honours bestowed on Academy Award® winning director/writer/producer Quentin Tarantino (Kodak Lifetime Achievement Award), as well as Tyler, the Creator, Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim) and others.

From Steve Bellamy, President of President of Motion Picture and Entertainment, Eastman Kodak Co.:

“It has been a banner year for film. This year, movies shot on film represent five of the 10 productions nominated in the Academy’s Best Picture and Cinematography categories and a total of 37 Oscar® nominations.”

“This is a great testament to the intrinsic value of film to the motion picture arts. We are excited to celebrate these extraordinary filmmakers at the Kodak Film Awards this year.”

This year’s Kodak Film Awards also celebrated a number of productions shot on film in 2019, including:

  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Academy Award, Golden Globes, BAFTA, Critics Choice)

According to their press release, Kodak has seen a substantial increase in film sales each year for five consecutive years and has invested in film processing labs across the world to meet the excitement and demand surrounding film.

From my perspective, the security of motion picture film equals the security of still photographic film. As it was in 2015, so it is in 2020. The resurgence of film is here and with your support, it’s only going to get bigger.

  1. @Kodak_ShootFilm 🙌🏼👏🏼 #filmisnotdead

  2. Excellent news 😍

  3. This has to be good news for stills photographers, too, even though most won’t be using cine stock, as it keeps Kodak going as a film producer.
