There are a few days left for 2019 but fingers crossed, it’s the first year for quite some time where we haven’t seen one or more film discontinued – great, isn’t it?
In fact, we’ve seen somewhere in the region of three new film stocks announced AND released – ILFORD ORTHO PLUS, Fujifilm NEOPAN 100 ACROS II and Lomography LomoChrome Metropolis XR 100-400 in multiple formats. Oh, and there’s also Kodak EKTACHROME E100 in 120 and 4×5 (8×10 coming in Q1 2019!). There have also been new photographic paper (from ILFORD and Foma Bohemia), as well as a plethora of new hardware and development kits. Film photography continues to go from strength to strength.
Interesting for me was the spread of the most popular film reviews here on EMULSIVE. There was a real interest in consumer/budget film stocks which every so slightly beat the pro stocks like Tri-X, Portra, HP5, etc. This, in part, backs up my thinking of where the film community is today: there are more and more new entrants who are picking up Fujicolour C200, Kodak Gold/ColorPlus, Lomography and other films. Combined with information from labs telling me that they’re seeing more consumer films than ever and we – hopefully – have a recipe for long term growth as these new film shooters mature photographically speaking.
It’s on everyone to help nurture them so they can, in turn, help to spread the word. So I’d like to ask you, what are you doing to support new film shooters?
