5 Frames… With Psychedelic Blues (EI 400 / 35mm format / Nikon N80) – by KristenWithACamera

“Do you remember when we first met? I thought I had wandered into a dream.”

I have always loved that quote from The Lord of the Rings. Dustin Adams’ hand fogged film Psychedelic Blues brought that quote to life for me by turning ordinary life into a dreamscape with colorful and unpredictable flares of color. This film is one that I want to treasure, which is why my other roll of it is (still) in my Canon Demi EE17 half-frame 35mm camera

Aside from this film, there are a few Revolog films that have color effects. Those films are: Kolor, 460nm and 600nm. I’ll be trying those out as well in the near future. Hopefully this year. I also plan to shoot more of Dustin’s film, especially during those times when I feel like I’m in a creative rut.

These photos were taken on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. (Except the photo of the airplane. That was taken driving past Newark Airport down I-95 South toward Seaside Heights). You can’t live in New Jersey and not go down the shore in the summertime.

My favorite image in this set is the one of the pinwheels. The light leaking into the edges of the frame makes me feel like I am being teleported back to my childhood. It fills me with nostalgia of the blue slinky pinwheel that I had as a child that may or may not still exist in my great grandmother’s basement.

I shot this series with a Nikon N80 with the Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens. I’ve had that camera since senior year of college (I believe) and have never wanted to part ways with it. Though I did lust after the Nikon F100, the N80’s bigger brother, but the N80 packs a big bang for your buck. The autofocus and speed is unbelievable with the combination of the camera and AF 50mm lens. That combination works very well for me and I don’t wish I’d shot this film in another camera.

Check out Dustin’s Website and his out of this world hand fogged Psychedelic Blues film!

  1. What an odd concept. Deliberately destroy perfectly good film by fogging it, then sell it to people. Astonishing, really. Your results are gorgeous.
