5 Frames… With Kentmere 400 (EI 1600 / 35mm format / Leica M4) – by Paul Lewis

I shot this roll during a visit to Hull in the United Kingdom. I usually shoot ILFORD HP5 PLUS and push it to EI 1600 but had a roll of Kentmere 400 in my bag and wanted to see how this film looked when pushed to 1600 also.

I was in Hull for a work-related event and chose to take some time out to shoot some street photography in the city at the tail-end of the City of Culture events taking place there throughout 2017.

I shot these frames on my Leica M4 with the Voigtlander Color Skopar 35mm f/2.5. The camera/lens combination is my regular one, though sometimes I use a Zeiss Planar 50mm f/2 lens instead of the Color Skopar. However, I find the combination of the M4 and the Color Skopar to be perfect for me, allowing me to shoot almost intuitively with minimum fuss: I either use the Sunny 16 rule or in more tricky situations, take a base light reading with a Sekonic L-308 and then just allow myself to become absorbed in the process of photography.

I was pleased with the effects of pushing Kentmere 400 to 1600; I still have a preference for HP5 PLUS but would be happy shooting Kentmere 400 at this speed again.

  1. This is a lovely set of photos. Your technique is really good.
Some day perhaps you would share your exposure and developing techniques for high ISO? The tone on this set is worth copying.
It’s nice to know the film is OK too!
