These 5 frames are from a roll of ILFORD HP5 PLUS I shot on my Nikon FE and 24mm f/2.8D lens while visiting Toronto earlier this year. It had been raining for two full days. Then finally on Saturday afternoon, the rain stopped. I grabbed the two cameras I had brought with me and headed out. My Fujifilm GA645 was loaded with a roll of Fujifilm Fujichrome Provia 100F and I managed to finish the role despite the gray overcast weather. I have no idea how those pictures turned out. It’s in for processing and I cannot wait to see the results. If my memory serves me correctly the last roll of color slide film I shot was in in the 1980s.

The other camera I had with me that day was my trusty Nikon FE. I loaded it up with a roll of HP5 PLUS and set the ISO to 1600. The area was just full of photo opportunities at every turn. I usually like working at ISO 1600 on an overcast dull day. It allows you to maintain a high enough shutter speed even when stopping down to f/8. That makes focus less of an issue on the street especially using a 24mm lens. According to the true DoF app on my phone if I focus at 14ft I would have 4ft to infinity in focus.

Another benefit is the additional contrast introduced when processing the film. Pushing a film 2 stops generally leads to a nice increase in contrast and grain which complemented the evenly dispersed soft light that I had to work with that day. I tried to capture the mood of the street. It was cloudy and cold. People were bundled up and moving quickly.

I developed the film as soon as I returned home in ILFORD’s ILFOTECH DD-X. I find the tones, contrast and grain very pleasing when HP5 PLUS is push-processed 2 stops and developed in DD-X.
