My favourite colour negative film is Fuji Reala 100 which was discontinued quite a few years ago (thanks a lot Fuji). Luckily for me, I have managed to source quite a bit of it from various places and have stockpiled a quite lot.

But obviously there will come a time when I can’t get any more or the prices become exorbitant, so I have been trying various film stocks that are readily available to buy fresh.

Lomography Colour Negative 400, which also comes in 100 & 800 ISO too but I am yet to try, is available in both 35mm and 120 format and can be purchased for under £4 per roll here in the UK. When compared to other C41 films like Kodak Portra 400 or Fuji 400H, it’s a bargain.

The film performs excellently in both bright sunshine and dull, overcast conditions which is what we seem to get more of here in Wales.

The colours do really pop when in good light but that said the subtler colours you get when its overcast really lends this film for portraits maybe (I plan on shooting some soon to test).

The sharpness and dynamic range is also excellent and the film scans very easily.

So if you are looking for a colour film stock that is still being produced that works in most situations and produces excellent results even when compared to the big boys then give this film a try … you won’t be disappointed.

PS. You can see two examples here and here on my blog, and you can see more about the film on Lomography’s website.
