5 frames with… Fuji Venus 800 (EI 800 / 35mm / Nikon F6) – by Sandeep Sumal

I had never heard of Fujifilm Venus 800 before just the normal Fujifilm Superia X-TRA 800.  A bit of research confirmed that this was a different stock to the Superia.  I am a big fan of the Kodak Portra 800 so bought this film to see what the Fuji version was like.  800 speed film is very useful especially in the UK winter.  I loaded up the camera (all shots were taken on a Nikon F6 with the 50mm 1.4 AF-D lens) and went to Brighton with the family.  I had no plan except to try and shoot different lighting conditions to ‘test’ how the film performs.

For colour films I normally like slide films, I find Portra 800 expensive and this Fuji film is the same price range.  However as it is C-41 process it makes it cheaper overall than slide if you include the developing costs as well.

So overall what do I think about this, well let’s put it in song

A film box on Fuji mountain top
Was burning like a silver flame
The summit of beauty and love
And Venus 800 was her name

She’s got it
Yeah baby, she’s got it
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
Your camera’s desire
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
Your Camera’s desire

Her weapons were her 800 ISO
Making every colour mad
Black as the dark night was
Got neon when no one else had

She’s got it
Yeah baby, she’s got it
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
Your camera’s desire
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
Your camera’s desire

She’s got it
Yeah baby, she’s got it
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
Your camera’s desire
Well, I’m your Venus
I’m your fire
Your camera’s desire
