“What about Berlin?”, I asked my partner.
We were looking for a city break last October and had no idea where to go. Flights to Berlin were cheap and I had won a guidebook a few years back that I’d never used.
“Okay”, she replied quickly enough.
Berlin it was. The next obvious question was “What film?” My partner couldn’t help there so it took a bit longer to figure out. I quickly settled on colour as I wanted to capture some of the autumn tones.
After much changing of minds, I went with Lomography Color Negative 400. It’s not my favourite film, but it was the first film I used back in March 2018 when I began shooting film again. I was on holiday with my partner then, too. I shot it at box speed.
The camera was an easy choice. The Minolta SRT101 with the Minolta MD 50mm f/2 that I’d gotten from my uncle. It was my workhorse then.
And off we flew. As soon as we reached the city, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Everything was green. Trees, grass, and late flowers were woven into the fabric of the city. Concrete and nature seemed to co-exist as a matter of fact. And I fell in love with this. Walking the streets was like meandering through a giant park instead of a busy bustling capital city. As we explored, my camera was incessantly pointed at the wildness around.
Having only been able to scan the negatives in January, I had forgotten a lot of what I had shot. So it was a bit of a surprise to find how little of the street life I had captured. But then again, my strongest memories of Berlin are of the dialogue people and buildings had with nature, not what they got up to on the tarmac of the pavements and in the blocks of concrete and glass.
