In July of 2018, I made the switch from 100% digital to 100% film. I started out shooting manual SLRs (Nikon F3 and Nikon FE2) and was pleased with those cameras. However, I had a ton of pro Nikon G series lenses and wanted to put them to use. I was also longing for autofocus, auto film advance, auto rewind, and REALLY missed spot metering. Enter the Nikon F100. This film SLR is about as close as you can get to a Digital SLR. I can use my G lenses, have autofocus, and have a ton of metering modes I used heavily in my digital days.

Not only have I switched from digital to film, I’ve also moved across the United States, leaving behind my group of friends who were always available for me to experiment new techniques with. I’ve settled into my new home in Arizona and have been shooting with a few models. I quickly figured out Fujifilm Fujicolor Pro 400H is my favorite film stock! I love the way it renders skin tones, and the richness of the film comes through in almost any lighting scenario.

This shoot was with a local model named Brittany. I used the Nikon f100 and a Nikon 35mm f/1.4 G lens. I shot about two hours before sunset in an area called Old Town Scottsdale, full of tourist shops and waterway running alongside it. It was an ideal day to shoot film as it was slightly overcast and tons of light was bouncing off the storefronts creating flattering light. I spot metered all these photos and ran the camera in manual modeF

I really love these images. It was difficult to choose only five to share with you guys! Hope you enjoy the photos, and please don’t hesitate to ask questions!

Magnificent images, thank you for sharing them.

  2. Great photos! I started following you recently (wherever I see your name) as I am about ready to make the transition to film. My last film shooting was 1994 Woodstock (I was 24), so I think we’re about the same age. Keep going , its inspiring.

  3. Beautiful pictures !!
