EMULSIVE is a space for film photographers of all ages and backgrounds to share their knowledge, experience and thoughts about everything related to film photography.
We review film stocks and film cameras, publish essays and photo stories; and are the home of the EMULSIVE Interview, a series of interviews with film photographers the world over – 104 at the time of writing!
You can probably best describe us as reasonable advocates of film.
How can I get involved?
The answer is frequently and with passion. We’d love to hear your stories and feature them on our little corner of the internet.
We currently submissions for camera/film reviews, photo stories and photo sets, travelogues and long-form essays. Essentially, if you have something to get off your chest, please get in touch and we’ll work something out.
If you’re a lab and would like to get featured on both the Global Film Lab Map, please let us know. We’d also be honoured to feature you and your war stories.
Want to see what other lovers of film photography have contributed to EMULSIVE? We’ve got your back.
Hang on, what’s this “reasonable advocates” rubbish all about?
The internet is a wonderful place to discover, share and converse but the inherent digital distance can have the handy side effect of creating argument and tension under the guise of discussion and debate.
By “reasonable advocates of film” we mean this: film as a medium of expression is an individual choice and absolutely 100% not suitable for each and every photographic endeavour.
We believe that while film remains far superior to digital photography in many ways, digital is also far superior in others. Each opinion, use-case and preference should be respected.
Although EMULSIVE is purely focused on film photography from an editorial standpoint, we respect that many of our readers (and featured interviewees) use digital cameras – so do we (mostly for shots of food/feet for Instagram).
Why do you do this?
The project was born from equal parts frustration and love – frustration with the lack of current, reliable examples and reference material for film stocks and film cameras; and love because we really do love the medium.
We want to share what we’ve learned and help the community do the same. There’s too much in the way of disinformation and old wives’ tales out there about film and in part, we hope to dispel and verify those claims through testing and demonstration.
…and the name?
EMULSIVE comes from a contraction of “EMULSion is emotIVE“, although the word itself conveniently also describes a substance that can be made into an emulsion – unexpected but nice!
It also has a nice feel to it and rolls nicely off the tongue, don’t you think?
Is it free?
We display ads on the site to try and cover our web/email hosting and associated costs, and really appreciate your decision not to use an ad blocker.
We don’t ask you to donate money and would rather you sent us a roll of film or a film camera to test/review instead of suggesting a donation (we’ll send the latter back, or give it away in a competition – it’s up to you).
Our editorial is free of sponsorship and whilst we’ve been asked to review products by various vendors, we’ve yet to find one that agrees with our requirement for impartiality. UPDATE: watch this space!
That said, if you have a film-related product that you’d like reviewed, we’d love to hear from you. Simply use the contact page to get in touch.
How often is the site updated?
As of August 2016, we aim to publish at least five new image posts (taken by EMULSIVE), one interview and two articles/essays released each week. Interviews are released on Wednesday’s at ~11am EST.
Hang on, EMULSIVE and EMULSIVE? What gives?
EMULSIVE is a project run by EMULSIVE…confused?
How can I keep up?
We thought you’d never ask! EMULSIVE is most active (socially) on Twitter, although there are Facebook, Flickr and Instagram feeds you can follow to name a few. You also have the option of following via RSS, or via our daily/weekly newsletters.
Did we miss anything?
