My return to film: Adam J White

My name is Adam White. I am a hybrid photographer based in Carlsbad, NM. I in December 2014 I started shooting film more seriously. I started dabbling with film back in 2009 as something to try and see what the results would be. Used a Mamiya 645 in a studio setting (not sure of the model anymore). But the results were not bad other than my exceeding the flash sync speed. Fast forward to June of 2014, I had a Canon EOS 630 and started using it again for family related images. This sparked my curiosity in film again, so I...

I am Gareth Buckett and this is why I shoot film

I’m pleased to be able to bring you the words and photography of Gareth Buckett, Australian-based film and digital photographer; and curator of nikonf5.net. Enough from me, it’s over to you, Gareth!     Hi Gareth, what’s this picture, then? GB: This is an image I took a few years ago standing on the shores of Lake Phewa, Nepal (Nikon F4 with Kodak E100VS). It was the only frame I took that day and it turned out to be the last one of that trip. There are many ‘brochure’ shots of the lake but the sad reality is it’s...

Introducing the LAB-BOX – daylight loading and film development from ars-imago

Last Monday I was lucky enough to grab some time with ars-imago‘s Giorgio Di Noto to talk about their new daylight film development system, the LAB-BOX, which has just this minute opened doors on Kickstarter (12pm EST, 21st Feb 2017). If you’re familiar with ars-imago and follow them on Facebook or Instagram then you’ll have seen teasers left, right and centre over the past few months. The idea is simple, a self-contained, modular daylight-loading and film development system with not a single dark room or film changing bag in sight. Perhaps this video will help describe it a bit better:   I was one of...

Travelogue: Bordeaux – Paul Schofield

One of the best things about going on holiday is having the time to roam around with a camera in unfamiliar surroundings. I sometimes struggle to find a fresh perspective at home so going somewhere different is always inspiring. Finding something new to photograph and getting completely lost in the moment is why I keep taking pictures. Last summer, we house swapped in Bordeaux for a fortnight. House swapping is unpredictable; you don’t know exactly what to expect and sometimes you end up in places you wouldn’t have chosen otherwise. Despite the post-Brexit exchange rate, Bordeaux ticked lots of...

Building a naked Aero Ektar Speed Graphic: The AEROgraphic project part 1 – introduction and required materials

“The Speed Graphic. A camera barely alive. We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better, stronger, faster.” I make no apology for this cheesy quote, ripped-off from the Six Million Dollar Man, none at all. It started off as a jokey hashtag (#SixMillionDollarCam) on Twitter whilst I was recording my progress on this project and well, it kind of stuck. Now you’ve allowed me to indulge myself, let me begin with a bit of background.     About this series EDIT: Eagle-eye readers will notice that the original “Peacemaker” name has been changed to AEROgraphic. I had a change...

Looking back: what I learned shooting film for a year at 52 Rolls 2016 – Henry Joy McCracken

We’re very pleased to be able to simultaneously feature a review of Henry Joy McCracken’s 2016 52 Rolls project here on EMULSIVE. You can also find the article on the 52 Rolls website right here.   For the past year, I have been shooting film as part of my “52 rolls” project, which I first heard about here on EMULSIVE. My own personal goal was to shoot at least one roll of film each week using only a 50mm lens on a Leica rangefinder equipped with black and white film. Before I started, I was aware of the wondrous properties...

HH: It’s a zeppelin stuck in a building! How awesome is that!?
