Long exposure film tests part one: ILFORD PAN F+, ILFORD FP4+, ILFORD Delta 100 Professional

Long exposure film photography is a technique central to my currently ongoing photography project, Where We Meet. Capturing the smooth extensions of water movement, contrasted with static elements of the shoreline is the key to this visual narrative. Of course, technical challenges and possibilities abound when it comes to using film for long exposure. First, there is the concept of reciprocity failure, something that to the outsider may seem like another black magic aspect of our craft. Then, the film, as it usually does, offers a wide range of creative options, going well beyond the crisp and predictable realm of...

I am Paolo De Jesus and this is why I shoot film

Today I’m very pleased to be able to bring you the thoughts and photography of one of the youngest members of the film photography community on Twitter. He’s talented, enthusiastic and above all else, passionate about film. It’s the one and only Pajamas Paolo De Jesus! Over to you, Paolo.     Hi Paolo, what’s this picture, then? PJ: That is one of my closest friends, Jaisan, and yes that is how her name is spelled. We have known each other for about two years or so, however, she and I got much closer sometime this year. She is a...

Travelogue: Istanbul, Turkey

Last winter I travelled to Istanbul to capture the city on 35mm film. I have a very minimalistic approach in my photography so as usual I only brought my Leica M6, 35mm Summicron and tons of Kodak Portra 400 film. I absolutely fell in love with the city and hope I could capture some of the vibe that’s omnipresent there. I stayed with a friend who lives in Kadıköy – a neighborhood on the Asian side of Istanbul. Looking at it on a map you might think this is inconvenient as most of the popular sights are on the...

Camera review: Me and my Mamiya C33 TLR with Instax back

Hey everyone! We are Damian and Sandra, and like many of EMULSIVE’s readers, we are passionate about photography! Some of our followers on Instagram have come across our Fujifilm Monochrome Photo Competition test entry on our website and noticed one of our newest addition to our camera family: a modified Mamiya C33 TLR (Twin Lens Reflex) camera with a Fuji Instax Mini back! We love how sharp and clear the photo quality is, and when we found someone in who was selling one of his modified cameras, we decided to buy it from him. Today we want to introduce this...

I am Laidric Stevenson and this is why I shoot film

The eagle-eyed amongst you will recognise today’s interviewee from his excellent and much-discussed review of the Bronica GS-1 system; as well as the beautiful images which accompany it. For the rest of you, you’re in for a treat. It’s time to sit down with Laidric Stevenson. Over to you, Laidric!   Hi Laidric, what’s this picture, then? LS: This is a self-portrait made back in 2004 during my second college tour. I graduated in 2000 with a BA (in Journalism), but after about 4 years of kicking around in the same job, I decided that I wanted to go back...

Camera review: Me and my Exakta VAREX IIb by Louis Sousa

You may recall the scene below from Rear Window (1954). Jimmy Stewart is fervently seated in a wheelchair, using an Exacta camera and massive telephoto lens, Jimmy is photographing scenes from the rear window of a neighboring building. He fears a murder occurred. Note the name (Exakta/Exacta on some models) is covered in black tape on Jimmy’s camera. Unless Jimmy is a freak of nature–and from the ergonomics of the camera–taking a sharp image in this pose is bordering on impossible. You see, the shutter button is behind his right thumb. Onto this beautiful but maddening camera. My Exakta, the Exacta...
