I am Raffael Stiborek and this is why I shoot film

We grabbed some time with Raffael Stiborek 28 year old photographer from Austria. You may have already seen some of his portrait work flying around the internet but if not, you’re in for a real treat. More from the man himself, so it’s over to you, Raffael!     Hi Raffael, what’s this picture, then? RS: These are my cousins (with my grandma in the background), enjoying the first summer day in our garden. It’s a really personal picture for me because the garden means pure relaxation. Also, it was from the first roll of Kodak Tri-X 320 I shot...

Push processing Ilford HP5+ – EI 800 to EI 6400

Hi! My name is Daniel and I live in Helsinki, Finland. I “rediscovered” film around 1.5 years ago and since then, I haven’t shot much in the way of digital – including about a year of having no digital cameras at all. To me, film is superior in every aspect – its tones, grain, and the way it renders in general. I hear that digital sensors are overcoming film in every way these days but have personally found this to be untrue. Of all the problems I had with digital photography there was one that always got me; photograph in the dark...

Introducing #FP4Party – celebrating ILFORD FP4+

Sometimes things happen fast and sometimes they happen REALLY FAST. #FP4Party falls into the latter end of that speedy spectrum. What started out as a few comments on a post of one of my favorite Ilford FP4+ photographs quickly turned into a bit of a gush-fest about the qualities of this venerable middling speed black and white film. Those comments ultimately found themselves turning into #FP4Party: a celebration of this wonderful film in all formats.   Tuning forks – Ilford FP4+ / EI 125 / 35mm – https://t.co/RprsNKWhbS @ILFORDphoto — EMULSIVE (@EMULSIVEfilm) August 25, 2016   The premise of#FP4Party is simple: we...

Featured Project: Nightcall by Dee Elegia

I’ve lived in Manchester now for roughly two and half years, having relocated from Scotland to work on my photography full-time. For the first year or so I lived more on the outskirts of town in a very rural part of South Manchester. Fields and trees abound, and little country roads without any street lights. Not great when you don’t drive and have to hulk down them late at night on your own. Around spring 2015, I relocated to a new apartment nearer the city centre and thus a more urban environment. I’ve always found that my work is...

I am Sam Smith and this is why I shoot film

Welcome to EMULSIVE interview 102! Today we’re grabbing some time with new film shooter Sam Smith from Nottingham in the UK. Sam’s a bit of a medium format landscape junkie, as you’ll see below. Over to you, Sam!     Hi Sam, what’s this picture, then? This is the last picture I took on a trip to the Peak District three days after I bought my Hasselblad. I got up at 3:40 in the morning so I could get on the first train and get there at 7:00am, just after sunrise. It had snowed quite a lot the night before and...
